Continuation of progress meetings

In recent weeks, a number of progress meetings have been held on collaborative R&D projects coordinated by France Energies Marines. A look back at the main progress made by our teams and partners.

07/02: SPECIES
  
This project examines the potential interactions between the electrical connection cables of ORE projects and benthic organisms in coastal marine ecosystems. The meeting was an opportunity to take stock of a year 2018 rich in experiments:

  •     in situ monitoring of benthic communities found near submarine cables,
  •     offshore measurements of electromagnetic fields produced by export cables,
  •     laboratory work on the effect of electromagnetic fields on juvenile lobster lobsters.

3 sites are currently involved in the project: Paimpol-Bréhat (Côtes d'Armor), SEM-REV (Loire-Atlantique) and Jersey. An agreement has just been signed to also integrate the corridor where the export cable for the Sabella tidal turbine is located, off the ïle d'Ouessant.
  

12/02: THYMOTE
  
By combining measurements and numerical modelling, this project aims to obtain high-resolution information on turbulence in the Raz Blanchard. This is in order to better estimate the efficiency and positioning of the turbines and to optimize the sizing of the machines. The meeting provided an opportunity for rich exchanges on:

  •     local and regional turbulence modelling work, which was carried out as part of two theses that will be completed in March.
  •     the results obtained during an in situ measurement campaign carried out with a double ADCP current profiler.
  •     the application of these various studies to a study of the effect of turbulence on turbines.

  

01/03: APPEAL
  
By integrating natural science and the human and social sciences, this project aims to measure the effects of floating wind farms on the functioning of coastal ecosystems. The meeting was an opportunity to review the main achievements of the 1st year of this 3-year project:

  •     organisation of 4 scientific campaigns at sea on the Groix Belle-île (Atlantic) and Leucate (Mediterranean) sites to collect and observe the fauna of the seabed;
  •     modelling work to study the impact of climate change on the probability of displacement of potential ecological niches of fish and cephalopods in the Bay of Biscay;
  •     first steps in the development of a methodology to measure the social acceptance of floating wind farms;
  •     drafting of a legal guide to environmental assessment dedicated to floating wind farm projects;
  •     analysis of the network of actors involved in the decision-making processes on the basis of several interviews conducted in the field.

  

26/03: GEOBIRD
  
The objective of this project is to develop a multi-parameter beacon for small and medium-sized seabirds. It will not only geolocate the animals, but also collect information on their flight altitude, dive depth and surrounding temperature. Such equipment currently exists only for large birds. This will therefore be a first in the field.
During the meeting, discussions focused on the prototype beacon that is being finalized as well as the two upcoming test phases.
The first will be conducted in April/May, on gulls on the Atlantic coast, by Bretagne Vivante. The second will be carried out in July/August, on Scopoli Shearwater in the Riou archipelago and the Islands of Marseille, by CEFE.
The day also included a visit to the IPHC Strasbourg facilities and rich exchanges with the teams.

  

Le 28/03 : SOLCYP+
  
This project focuses on the cyclic stresses of offshore wind turbine monopiles. The discussions focused on a first series of tests carried out by IFSTTAR in a centrifuge concerning cyclic transverse stresses on a rigid pile in saturated sand. The displacement measurement was carried out by optical fibre. The Bragg grating provides a fine discretization at points of interest, essential for a realistic description of soil stiffness with rigid piles.
It is also an opportunity to review the thesis carried out as part of the project and supervised by Polytech'Lille. It aims to design a hybrid analytical/digital model of chalk behaviour. This type of limestone rock, which is very present in the seabed of northern France, has a complex viscoelastic behaviour. It is therefore important to have a model that addresses changes over time to take into account the degradation of soil properties. The model will then be calibrated in a three-dimensional shear box at the 3SR Laboratory in Grenoble.
