EOLINK

Proof of concept for an innovative floating wind generator

Duration: 1 year

Project description

The EOLINK concept provides an innovative floating wind generator design which aims to reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). The rotor nacelle assembly (RNA) is sustained with both upwind and downwind thin arms, instead of a conventional single tower. This leads to better stress distribution, and less fatigue, which in turn decreases the mass of the floater and thus capital expenditure (CAPEX).
  
Operational expenditures (OPEX) are also lower thanks to a single point mooring system, which decouples maritime operations dedicated to mooring lines, power cables and floating turbine installation. In this FEM-EOLINK-IFREMER project, the proof of concept will be performed using the dynamic analysis of a scale model in tank tests. This will enable numerical model calibration and also the evaluation of innovative control strategies.

Objectives

  • Experimentally prove the concept of passive orientation.
  • Calibrate the numerical model using tank trials.
  • Quantify the reduction in the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) related to this innovative design and control strategy.
