Environmental impacts methodology guide  for marine tidal device technology

Duration: 11 months

Project description

GHYDRO is a methodology guide that will provide stakeholders in tidal  stream energy projects  with decision-making help  for the environmental integration of generators  and tidal farms. The scope of the guide encompasses the 3 phases of a tidal current project (installation, operation and dismantling) as well as all of its marine components (turbines, converter, cable, vessels, etc.). Environmental  compartments  covered are: oceanography (waves, currents), seabeds, underwater acoustics, bBenthic ecology, fisheries resources, marine mammals and sea birds.
  
To bring together the broadest range of expertise, France Energies Marines has created a consortium of specialists in tidal power technologies and in the marine environment. They come  from both research institutes and companies. Amongst its members, France Energies Marines has also consulted numerous experts in the marine environment field, technology developers and users  of coastal areas.
  
The methodology guide is widely distributed to environmental authorities, developers of tidal current power projects, environmental consultancy firms, users in sectors concerned by future tidal stream projects. GHYDRO will evolve through an iterative process as the various stream energy projects progress and as feedback becomes available on interactions with the marine environment.

Objectives

The document gives an initial series of recommendations and methods to:

  • describe the baseline state,
  • identify and analyse potential ecological changes,
  • draw up an environmental monitoring programme.
