STHYF

Seafloor cable stability and hydrodynamics

Duration: 2 years

Project description

The development of tidal turbine arrays requires managing the costs of stabilizing electric cables on the seabed in the presence of strong currents. Existing  methodologies  are suitable for sites where cable instability is mainly related to wave action. The very specific nature of strong currents found at tidal turbine sites requires an adaptation of these methodologies taking into account turbulence in the currents combined with waves and chaotic bathymetry.
STHYF proposes to identify the limitations of current methods for this application and to define a new instability prediction model validated by dedicated testing and numerical calculations.

Objectives

  • Identifying the current limits of these applications (stabilization solutions, prediction methods, means of testing and monitoring)
  • Characterizing of complex tidal turbine site currents using numerical and experimental approaches (turbulence, waves, bathymetry)
  • Developing a methodology appropriate for the estimation of cable stability
