Raz Blanchard hydrodynamics: measurements and modelling

Project description

Improving energy production estimation is a key aspect of research in the field of marine renewable energy. The typical error in tidal current prediction at tidal energy sites is about 10%, which results in a 30% error for the tidal power estimation. To reduce these errors, wave-current interactions need to be correctly taken into account in hydrodynamic numerical models. HYD2M will address this issue based on in situ field experiments and an high frequency radar deployment that will help in developing the hydrodynamic numerical models through a better understanding of the wave-current interaction physics. The project is expected to provide a reliable numerical platform for the prediction of hydrodynamics in the Raz Blanchard.

Objectives

  • Study the impact of sea state and storms on energy resources using in situ radar measurements and numerical modeling.
  • Applications: site monitoring, forecasting and estimation of production.
